Background

The Deakin University project heralded a new chapter in Amicus’s history. Designed by Six Degrees spreading over 3,000 sqm, Amicus delivered the fitout in 6 weeks.

Solution

The modern university library has become the default meeting and socialising space for students. Part of our brief was to remove the “shhhh!” factor from the Library while still facilitating traditional uses and quiet study. Six Degrees pursued the concept of the Library as a “village” where main ‘streets’ take most of the traffic, and secondary circulation paths lead people to different pockets of activity.

Benefit

Six Degrees designed a series of key village destinations including the ‘village green’ – a central, informal meeting space and group study area; ‘Active squares’- housing various uses such as computer labs, a gallery & checkout, and ‘Pocket parks’ - providing eddies away from the main study area and lounge spaces for relaxation.

The intention was to provide a range of possible spaces for students to choose from depending on their needs within an environment that is welcoming, comfortable and dynamic. The new library fit out for Deakin University included extensive joinery works using eco-friendly raw products across 2 substantial levels.

The significant scope of the project included a magnificent staircase and vibrant entrance canopy works. An accelerated program, the Library was opened in time for “O” week on campus.
