Completed: 2019

Background

Facing the challenge of outgrowing their current space, NTT (formerly NTT Communications) were gearing up to undertake the move from their traditional office space located at 201 Kent Street to the newly established premise of Darling Park. The Japanese based telecommunications giant had outgrown their existing space and required greater smaller and larger collaboration spaces and were focused on transitioning to Activity Based Working. The move meant closer proximity to their sister company office (NTT - formerly Dimension Data) and enabled shared resources with usage of the Client Innovation Space.

NTT were after a paired back, calming design which was a nod to their Japanese origins. Engaged on both their Sydney and Melbourne projects, Amicus ensured effective connectivity and security were key factors, with audio visual communications facilitating collaboration between both cities. From a cultural perspective the move attempted to break down the power distance between senior management and other workers while infusing an Australian spirit to the traditionally Japanese organisation. Amicus partnered with PTID to create a modern office space with similar look and feel to NTT - formerly Dimension Data with a unique look and feel of dark blue hues and timber.

Solution

The new agile space has introduced fresh features into the environment including lockers, collaboration zones, client facing meeting rooms, informal meeting spaces and sit to stand desks. The active environment has propelled the cultural change to allow for areas of free movement while reducing the overall footprint. The terrace is a real ‘wow factor’ and has enabled greater access and informal meetings to take place. The ‘Zaizen’ room consisting of a multifunctional massage chair, calming scenery, background music and light control, is a staff favourite to unwind and destress, acting as a sanctuary during busy periods.

Benefit

The final product is a space the NTT team can fully engage with. The kitchen with connecting terrace has been a hit with staff, with managers taking teams out to the space for informal meetings to inspire workers and inject creativity during the workday. Staff feel motivated to utilise the entire office creating a shift to new patterns of work. Sit to stand desks have been well received with additional desks factored into the design for future proofing extensions. With a greater emphasis on AV, the project was successfully delivered, and package signed off in accordance with stringent standards. The positive result crafted an improved culture and a dramatic refresh of the NTT Communication space.
