Case Study

AmSpec

Melbourne, VIC
160 sqm
Completed 2024

Background

Global testing, inspection and certification service provider AmSpec, engaged Amicus Labline to embark on the development of a new fuel testing laboratory within an existing warehouse facility in Melbourne. The laboratory was designed to occupy approximately 160 square meters of space inside an existing warehouse, introducing several technical and regulatory challenges.

One of the main concerns was securing the necessary approvals for a change of use, enabling the building to accommodate the operational needs required for fuel testing. Additionally, the existing warehouse structure was not suitable for the laboratory’s needs in its current state. Structural modifications were required to integrate the laboratory within the warehouse, ensuring it could safely support AmSpec’s laboratory testing needs.

Solution

A bespoke mechanical solution was designed by Amicus Labline to address the Body Corporate’s requirement that no visible mechanical systems could be seen from the street. This added complexity to the project, requiring calculated design and installation.

The design adhered to building and laboratory requirements that allowed for safe storage and reticulation of laboratory gases such as helium, nitrogen, hydrogen and compressed air. Additionally, it was crucial that the balance of air flows was maintained due to the nature of the materials used as well as the number of ducted fume hoods in a relatively confined space, as such, necessitating a high volume of fresh air in the laboratory.

Benefit

Throughout the project, regular meetings were held with both the client and subcontractors, ensuring open communication and seamless coordination. This proactive approach helped keep the project on track, ensuring it proceeded smoothly and even finishing three days ahead of the proposed completion date.

The project resulted in a sleek design that accentuates AmSpec’s branding with a bold splash of red. Amicus Labline meticulously planned and delivered a laboratory, enabling AmSpec to safely and efficiently conduct high-quality fuel testing in a controlled and compliant environment.
