Background

Dexion’s new Melbourne workplace was shaped by a simple motivation, the aim to create a space people genuinely want to return to. As they were relocating within an industrial precinct, the site brought a unique set of challenges. With limited surrounding amenities and a workforce accustomed to flexible working, the workplace needed to offer more than a typical office environment. It needed to feel welcoming, comfortable and considered in supporting both the functional needs of work, and the day-to-day experience of being there.

The project also brought Dexion, their Automated Storage Solutions branch and National Make Good Solutions together under one roof, creating a broader cultural focus around strengthening connection across teams and encouraging greater collaboration between office and warehouse staff. We were engaged to shape a workplace that reflects Dexion’s strong, family-oriented culture while creating a practical environment that feels connected, engaging and grounded in how their people work. With an existing relationship already in place, we had a strong understanding of their people, operations and priorities, allowing us to build on that foundation throughout the project.

Solution

The workplace is designed around how Dexion’s team operates day to day. A range of integrated facilities, including a gym, recreational spaces, end-of-trip amenities and multiple kitchen areas were designed to support how people work, move and connect throughout the day. A large kitchen and breakout area sits at the centre of the workplace, creating a central point for informal work and interaction, allowing smooth transition to more focused work in the back-of-house and workstation areas.

Connection is reinforced through visibility and shared use of space, with glazed office fronts maintaining sightlines across teams and amenities positioned to encourage interaction between office and warehouse staff. The flowing acoustic ceiling panels become a key expression of this idea, carrying a continuous sense of movement throughout the workplace reflecting the motif of tying together the three consolidated teams. Reflecting the curved forms seen across the interior, they improve acoustic comfort while subtly defining zones for collaboration, transition and focused work.

The breakout area draws from residential and hospitality settings, utilising a material palette that introduces warmth and softness through timber detailing, textured finishes, integrated planting and muted tones. Together, these elements create a workplace that feels cohesive, welcoming and aligned to how Dexion’s people work and connect.

Benefit

The workplace supports a more connected and engaged team environment. By integrating social, wellness and work contexts, staff are given choice in how they work and use the space throughout the day. Shared amenities and breakout areas create natural opportunities for interaction that help to strengthen relationships across the different teams.

The investment in in-house facilities addresses the challenges of the industrial location, while also positioning the workplace as somewhere people genuinely want to spend time in. It supports both the return to office and the ongoing attraction of new talent, offering an experience that stands apart within an industrial sector.

Across the space, there is a consistent sense of warmth, flexibility and focus on Dexion’s culture while supporting productivity, wellbeing and long-term engagement.
