Flexible meeting room suite with operable glass walls in Gilchrist Connell’s Melbourne office fitout at 530 Collins Street.

Background

Our involvement began early in the journey, working alongside the Gilchrist Connell team and their tenant representative as they considered their next move in Melbourne. Through this process, an opportunity emerged to secure space within 530 Collins Street, a GPT asset whose quality, location and presence aligned with the firm’s ambitions, and one we know well having delivered a number of successful projects there and built strong relationships with both the GPT team and our clients.

The project centred on shaping a workplace that could reflect the strength and professionalism of the Gilchrist Connell brand while supporting the way their people work day to day. The brief called for a space that balanced an impressive client experience with the practical needs of a growing legal team confident and refined in its expression, yet welcoming and highly functional.

The Melbourne office also became an important milestone for the firm, forming the first project in a broader national workplace rollout. As part of the process, design principles and guidelines were developed to support future Gilchrist Connell workplaces across Australia.

Solution

We designed an elevated yet down-to-earth commercial law firm workplace, balancing professionalism with warmth while allowing the space to evolve alongside the firm’s growing team.

The design draws from the 530 Collins Street lobby, carrying its earthy tones, refined detailing and layered materiality into the tenancy to create a seamless and cohesive arrival experience. Timber, fluted glass and subtle brass accents are used consistently throughout the space, establishing a sense of quiet sophistication that feels both confident and approachable.

This material language unfolds across the workplace in a way that supports both client engagement and day-to-day performance. The arrival experience transitions naturally into a series of flexible, interconnected spaces where front-of-house, meeting and breakout areas work together rather than as separate zones. Timber seating with integrated planting creates a natural focal point and softens the overall environment, while surrounding meeting rooms are designed to feel open with a strong focus on acoustic comfort.

As the workplace moves into more focused areas, the palette becomes calmer and more pared back. Open workspaces are designed to maximise natural light and clarity, with clean lines and integrated greenery supporting concentration, while enclosed rooms along the perimeter provide quieter environments for deep focus work. Subtle shifts in material, lighting and form guide movement through the space, creating a sense of flow without the need for rigid separation.

Throughout, the design balances the structure and tradition of the legal profession with softer, contemporary elements creating a workplace that feels cohesive, refined and adaptable, while still supporting the needs of the people working within it.

Benefit

The Melbourne workplace provides Gilchrist Connell with a sophisticated and highly functional environment that supports both client engagement and employee wellbeing.

A statement front-of-house experience creates an immediate impression, with flexible spaces that shift between meetings, mediations and larger internal sessions. This is balanced by a workplace designed to support focused legal work, with a high provision of quiet rooms and focus spaces alongside well-equipped workstations and carefully integrated acoustic planning. The space accommodates a range of working styles, from collaboration and connection through to concentration and focus This ensures the environment remains practical, comfortable and effective for the team’s day-to-day use.

The success of the Melbourne fitout has strengthened the partnership with Gilchrist Connell, leading to multiple additional commissions and the upcoming delivery of the firm’s Perth and Brisbane offices as part of a broader national rollout.
