Background

As one of the most complex and unique projects we have ever delivered, Harry The Hirer’s new space stands out as a feat of design, construction and technological ingenuity that redefines the possibilities of an office space. As Australia’s industry leader in creative and design-based event services, Harry The Hirer’s vision of their space extended far beyond a conventional workplace. The space needed to embody the same sense of scale, spectacle and grandeur that the company delivers for their clients across major events, conferences, exhibitions and bespoke production. As such, their space not only needed to be a place of work and inspiration, but a showcase of Harry The Hirer’s creative capability and expertise in artistic audiovisual display.

Set within a 100-year-old building with rich heritage and history, the project required a careful balance between preserving architectural character and integrating contemporary technology and design. We worked with our design partner RCA Studio to deliver a vision only Harry The Hirer could imagine, a live production that is bold, immersive and unforgettable, where the building’s historic charm meets the company’s forward-thinking creativity.

Solution

With almost everything in the build custom made, including 3km of LED spaghetti lighting across each floor and a constellation of LED screens showcasing curated digital art, the multi-level space illuminates into an enveloping, choreographed light display. The show starts on the ground floor where an array of event setups is arranged to display Harry The Hirer’s capability to clients upon entry. The next event continues on the next level where a signature breakout space elevates the journey, defined by full height LED walls and ceiling of flowing, aquatic moving imagery, immersing users as if stepping into another world, away from the traditional office setting.

Much like Harry The Hirer’s ethos, events know no bounds when it comes to creativity and scale. To reflect this, the space emphasises verticality, seamlessly connecting experiences through a towering glass LED screen, the largest in the southern hemisphere, which spans from the ground floor ceiling to the third floor ceiling. Achieving this required a major structural intervention where central cut-outs were made in each floor to form a multi-storey atrium. Each level is linked by a sculptural feature staircase, articulated through intersecting flights that create a dynamic, geometric composition allowing an abundant of natural light to flow through from the skylights to the ground floor. Perforated metal balustrades further enhance the effect, filtering both natural and coloured LED light to permeate across all levels.

The resulting workspace stands as a bold expression of the Harry The Hirer brand, showcasing their audiovisual and technological prowess as well as their creative capability.

As a highly technical, large-scale project, our team needed to adapt to evolving plans, predict challenges where the staged design presented uncertainties and find effective and decisive solutions to any technical problems that arose in order to reduce escalations in cost.

Overall, this project stands as the most remarkable projects we’ve ever delivered, redefining what is possible in a multi-level experiential workspace and setting a new standard for innovation, creativity, and technological artistry.
